Soft Sennelier Oil Pastels Leave Marks not unlike Brush Strokes in an Oil Painting

Since I have been standing at the easel to paint rock formations with Sennelier oil pastels, my technique has changed, as have the results.  I noticed I was leaving oil pastel stroke marks on the illustration board not unlike brush stokes upon a canvas.  Any layering results in a part of the bottom layering showing through the top layering with little or no blending or melding.  The oil pastel seems to have been put on more freely as noted by the marks of the pastels.
